Beaches in Vero Beach, FL: What Nobody Tells You Before You Go

Every public beach in Vero Beach and Indian River County is free to enter and free to park, with no meters and no resident sticker.
Dogs are banned at all city and county beach parks, but the Town of Indian River Shores allows leashed dogs on its beaches and off-leash dogs by permit, which most online guides get wrong.
Round Island Oceanside Park and Jaycee Beach Park both keep free beach wheelchairs on site, so the sand is reachable and not just the boardwalk.
Guarded beaches run about 9:20 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. in the city and 9:10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. at the county parks, and several of the prettiest beaches here have no lifeguard at all.
Sea turtle nesting runs March 1 through October 31, which changes where you walk, what you leave behind, and how oceanfront homes handle exterior lighting.

The dog question comes up more than any other, and most of the guides ranking for it right now give people the wrong answer. So I’ll start there, then work through everything else clients ask me before they load up the car.

Can you bring a dog to the beach in Vero Beach?

Depends entirely on which stretch of sand you’re standing on, and the three jurisdictions here have three different answers.

City of Vero Beach parks say no. That’s Jaycee, Humiston, South Beach and Sexton Plaza. Service animals only, and the city is strict about it.

Indian River County parks also say no. Round Island, Wabasso, Treasure Shores, Turtle Trail, Seagrape Trail, Tracking Station. It’s County Ordinance 205.03.22, it’s posted at every crossover, and I’ll say plainly that I think it’s out of step. Half the coastal counties in Florida have figured out how to designate a dog stretch. We haven’t.

The Town of Indian River Shores is where it changes. Leashed dogs are allowed on the beaches inside town limits. Off-leash is allowed too, by permit, from sunrise until 9 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. until sunset. You get the permit from the Town’s Public Safety Department at 772-231-2451, you have to physically bring the dog with you to get it, and the dog needs current vaccinations and no bite history. There’s an annual fee with a cheaper renewal after the first year.

Indian River Shores sits a few minutes north of Vero’s beachside. If a blog tells you the nearest dog-friendly beach is Walton Rocks in Jensen Beach, forty-five minutes south, that post was written by somebody who never checked. Walton Rocks is genuinely great and worth the drive if you want a full off-leash dog park on the ocean. It just isn’t your only option, and it isn’t your closest one.

For the rest of it, Vero Dog Park on Indian River Drive East gives you fenced space away from the sand, and most beachside patios along Ocean Drive won’t blink at a well-behaved dog under the table.

Is parking free at the beaches in Vero Beach?

Yes. Every one of them. No meters, no lot fee, no sticker program.

I don’t think people coming from South Florida understand how unusual that is until they’ve done it a few times. Drive ninety minutes down A1A and you’re paying twenty-five dollars to leave your car somewhere.

The limit here is spaces, not dollars. Round Island has 73 of them. Humiston’s lot is small and sits in the middle of the shopping district, so it goes first on a January Saturday and you’ll end up circling. When a lot’s full, drive two minutes and try the next access. There are more than a dozen along our stretch of A1A and most of them are half empty on a Tuesday.

Are the beaches wheelchair accessible?

More than people expect, and this is the other thing the older guides get wrong.

Round Island Oceanside Park keeps a beach wheelchair available free from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You need a photo ID copy and a signed use waiver, and you call 772-268-5978 when you get there. Jaycee Beach Park in the city has one too.

The boardwalks and ADA crossovers at South Beach, Humiston and Treasure Shores get you to the dune line. Soft sand is where a standard chair stops being useful, and that’s the gap the beach wheelchairs close. Call ahead if a specific afternoon matters, because there’s one chair and the waiver takes a few minutes.

When are lifeguards on duty?

City beaches, meaning Jaycee, Humiston and South Beach, staff towers roughly 9:20 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. County beaches like Round Island run roughly 9:10 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. Both shift with the season, so treat those as the dependable window.

The county runs a beach conditions hotline at 772-226-3384 and it’s worth two minutes before you drive out.

Now the part I’d want somebody to tell me. Treasure Shores, Turtle Trail and Seagrape Trail have nobody watching the water. Not reduced hours. None. They’re quiet and beautiful for exactly that reason, and they’re also where you shouldn’t send a nine-year-old out alone because the surface looks calm. Rip currents run this coast year-round and they’re indifferent to how flat it looks from the boardwalk.

Which beach is best with kids?

Jaycee Beach Park at 4200 Ocean Drive. Playground, sand volleyball, wide grass for kids who need to burn something off, covered pavilions with grills, restrooms and showers, lifeguards, and Seaside Grill sitting right on the boardwalk for when the snack situation collapses.

Humiston at 3000 Ocean Drive is the pick if you want to fold in lunch and shopping. Playground, sheltered picnic tables with outlets, a long concrete boardwalk, and a farmers market out front Saturday mornings.

Round Island Oceanside is my quiet recommendation. Five pavilions, five grills, playground, restrooms, showers, and far enough south that it never absorbs the Ocean Drive crowd. What’s not allowed on the beaches in Vero Beach

County parks prohibit pets, alcohol, open fires, camping, overnight parking, fireworks, drones and remote-controlled aircraft, and walking on the dunes or the vegetated areas west of the open beach.

You can fish outside the guarded zones, surf, dive, sunbathe, shell and picnic.

The alcohol one catches people every season. Cooler comes out, afternoon goes sideways.

Can you fish from the beach?

Yes, and surfcasting is common here. You need a Florida saltwater license and you need to stay clear of the guarded swimming areas. Turtle Trail and Seagrape Trail are the easiest places to do it without anybody around.

Are metal detectors allowed?

They’re not on the county’s prohibited list and people use them here constantly. We’re called the Treasure Coast because the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet went down off this shoreline, and silver still turns up.

Seagrape Trail Beach Access, about half a mile south of CR 510, is the spot locals name first. Wabasso is the other. The good hunting comes after a nor’easter or a hurricane swell scours the beach profile down, not on a calm July morning.

Fill your holes before you leave and stay off the dunes. During nesting season an open hole is a hazard to a hatchling and the county doesn’t treat it as a technicality.

Sea turtle nesting season

March 1 through October 31. Florida takes more sea turtle nests than anywhere in the country and this county absorbs a real share of them.

Marked nests get staked and taped, so walk around rather than through. Fill in what you dig. Carry out everything you carried in. No flashlights or phone lights on the beach after dark during the season. If you find an injured or dead turtle, call FWC at 1-888-404-FWCC and be ready to give the exact location and whether the animal’s been marked with spray paint.

Buyers should know this drives the exterior lighting rules on the barrier island. Shielded, low-mounted, long-wavelength fixtures on anything facing the ocean. It surprises people from out of state who’ve already picked out landscape lighting, and it belongs in the same mental category as our insurance and storm considerations, which is the question I field most from buyers up north.

Where’s the least crowded beach?

North county, almost always.

Turtle Trail Beach Access, 1.25 miles north of CR 510, is a paved lot and a boardwalk and that’s it. Seagrape Trail, half a mile south of CR 510, is the same idea with better odds of finding a coin. Treasure Shores, three miles north of CR 510, has the tall dunes and a pirate ship playground and still feels empty midweek.

In town, Tracking Station Beachfront Park at 800 46th Place is the one visitors drive straight past because the entrance hides between a CVS and a 7-Eleven on A1A. Free paved parking, lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and a beach that stays civilized when Ocean Drive is jammed.

Riomar I’d skip unless you know somebody who lives there. Beautiful sand, essentially no legal parking, and the neighborhood tows fast enough that you’ll spend more on the hook than you would have on a meter anywhere else in Florida.

What about surfing?

It’s real here, but it’s seasonal and swell-dependent. Late August through November is the good stretch, when storms offshore push clean long-period swell up the coast without ever coming ashore. Winter brings windier nor’easter surf. Midsummer is often flat enough to paddleboard on.

A few other things worth knowing

Sunrise is the best hour on this coast and it isn’t close. We face east, nobody’s up, and the light beats anything you’ll get at noon. Here’s where to watch the sunrise in Vero Beach if you want the good spots.

Round Island Riverside Park sits directly across A1A from the oceanside park. Eighty-two acres, two boat ramps, a kayak launch, a 400-foot boardwalk and an observation tower where you’ll reliably see manatees. You can do ocean in the morning and lagoon after lunch without moving the car.

There’s also more history under Round Island than the signage suggests. Over 140,000 personnel trained at the Fort Pierce Amphibious Training Base for the Omaha Beach landing, and the concrete tank traps installed offshore to stop German U-boats are still out there.

People come down for a week, park for free at Turtle Trail four days running, never pay a dime, never fight a crowd, and then go home and run the numbers against what that same week costs in Naples or Palm Beach. Living east of A1A stops making the ocean a destination and starts making it a habit.
