How To Screenshot On A Mac

Taking a screenshot on a Mac is a quick and easy way to capture what’s on your screen.

It’s a quick and easy way to save a specific part of a web page, document or app, or if you need to share a what’s on your screen with someone else. There are a few different ways to do it on your Mac.

Here are the two most common ways to screenshot on a Mac:

Using keyboard shortcuts

The easiest way to take a screenshot on a Mac is to use a keyboard shortcut. 

Option 1

Screenshot of the entire screen: Press Shift+Command+3.

Option 2

Screenshot of a selected area: Press Shift+Command+4, then click and drag to select the area you want to screenshot.

Option 3

Screenshot of a specific window: Press Shift+Command+4, then press Space bar. The cursor will change to a camera icon. Click on the window you want to screenshot.

Using the Screenshot app

If you need more control over your screenshots, you can use the Screenshot app. To open the Screenshot app, press Shift+Command+5.

The Screenshot app gives you the following options:

  • Take a screenshot: Click the Capture button.
  • Record a screen recording: Click the Record button.
  • Select a region to screenshot: Click and drag to select the area you want to screenshot.
  • Take a screenshot of a specific window: Click the Window button, then click on the window you want to screenshot.
  • Take a screenshot of the entire screen after a delay: Click the Timed button, then enter the number of seconds you want to wait before taking the screenshot.

Once you’ve taken a screenshot, it will be saved to your desktop. You can also edit the screenshot in the Screenshot app before saving it.

Additional Tips

These might help you along the way as well.

  • To take a screenshot of a menu, press Shift+Command+4, then press Space bar. The cursor will change to a camera icon. Click on the menu you want to screenshot.
  • To take a screenshot of a scrolling window, press Shift+Command+4, then hold down the Shift key while you drag to select the area you want to screenshot.
  • To take a screenshot of a website, press Shift+Command+3, then press Enter. The screenshot will be saved to your desktop as a web archive file.
